Fish Farming Equipment: The Only Guide You Will Need

September 3 By Samuel

Fish farming in Uganda gained momentum in 1953 in the central region, as a tool for reducing incidences in kwashiorkor in this region by providing rural households with the option of cheap, accessible protein.

The main types of fish reared in Uganda are:

  • African Catfish
  • Nile Tilapia
  • Mirror Carp
  • Singida Tilapia

Fish farming in Uganda is carried out in fish ponds, fish tanks, and fish cages. When looking at fish farming equipment in Uganda, therefore, consider the requirements for each type of farming.

a) Fish Pond Construction Equipment

  • Tape measure and string
  • Line level
  • Surveying equipment
  • Earthmoving and leveling equipment

b) Fish Tank Construction Equipment

  • Water inlet with valve
  • A black pipe above the floor of the tank to prevent sediments from forming at the bottom of the tank
  • Air supply lines for aeration
  • Double drain

c) Fish Cage Construction Equipment

  • Top Cover
  • Frame
  • Floats (Barrels)
  • Weights
  • Net
  • Anchor
  • Bag

Below are a few tips for choosing the right fish farming equipment in Uganda.

1. Buy your equipment from a registered dealer – If you purchase the fish farming equipment from a registered dealer, you will have access to genuine spare parts, warranties, guidance from qualified technicians, and additional resources to help you succeed as a fish farmer.

2. Do your research – Do not buy a piece of equipment just because people say it’s the best. Do your research to find out the best equipment for your fish farming venture. You can get this information from other fish farmers, online, and from farmers’ associations.

3. Stick to your budget – Don’t buy a piece of equipment that will put you in debt. Stick to what you originally intended to spend when making your purchase. Alternatively, talk to the dealer and come up with a payment plan – this works well for larger pieces of equipment.

4. Shop around – Before you finally decide on a piece of fish farming equipment, shop around. Look out for good prices, quality, and after-sales service.

5. Ask the right questions – When you finally identify the piece of equipment you want, ask the dealer questions that will confirm that you are making the right choice. Ask about longevity, warranty, cost, customer reviews, and after-sales service. You should also ask the dealer to give you good reasons why you should pick that piece of equipment instead of others on the market.
